Just stop to think about the game ‘Mortal Kombat’ that the trail already comes to players’ minds. Now, just days before the franchise ‘s new movie premiere in theaters , a remix of the 1990s theme song has been released by WaterTower Music.
The song, called ‘Techno Syndrome 2021’, was published on YouTube and streaming platforms earlier this Friday (9). The remix is signed by Benjamin Wallfisch. The composer worked on the soundtracks of some horror films , including ‘ It – A Thing ‘ and ‘Annabelle 2: The Creation of Evil’.

It was for ‘Stars Beyond Time’ that he was nominated for a Golden Globe and Grammy, along with Hans Zimmer and Pharrell Williams. Also with Zimmer, Wallfisch received BAFTA , Critics’ Choice Movie Award and Grammy nominations for his work on ‘Blade Runner 2049’.
The work was highly praised by Simon McQuoid, the film’s director. “Ben and I knew we needed to use the immortal classic ‘Techno Syndrome’ as the source for the entire ‘Mortal Kombat’ soundtrack. But we also knew that we had to create an updated version, and Ben delivered that,” said McQuoid, who has his debut work in theaters in the feature.
In addition to producing, Benjamin Wallfisch also recorded the song, mixed by Tom Norris, who has worked with Lady Gaga, The Weeknd, Grimes, Mariah Carey and other great artists in the music industry. The rest of the soundtrack for the new movie in the gaming franchise will be released in full on Friday, April 16th. There are 24 songs with themes for Lord Raiden, Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, Cole Young, Shang Tsung, Liu Kang and Kung Lao, as well as fight themes such as ‘Kano v Reptile’ and ‘Sub-Zero v Cole Young’.
“When they called me, I knew the responsibility that comes with scoring a franchise so rooted in pop culture and with such a passionate fan base. My first question was what could we do with ‘Techno Syndrome’, a song that is part of the DNA of the game and the original films?” recalled Wallfisch. The composer highlighted that the remix is a celebration of the world of Mortal Kombat and the fans.
The film opens in Brazil on May 13th. The New Line Cinema feature is produced by James Wan (‘Saws’ and ‘Aquaman’), Todd Garner, E. Bennett Walsh and director McQuoid. Greg Russo and Dave Callaham sign the script. ‘Mortal Kombat’ will have an 18 year rating, much darker and bloodier than those early 1990s.
English actor Lewis Tan (‘Deadpool 2’) plays protagonist Cole Young. The cast is very international, with Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson in the role of Kano and Joe Taslim bringing Sub-Zero to life. Mehcad Brooks (‘Supergirl’) will play Jax and Ludi Lin (‘Aquaman’) takes on the role of Liu Kang. Mileena will be played by Sisi Stringer and Daniel Nelson plays Kabal.
