A few days after Facebook’s big data leak made the news, it was LinkedIn’s turn to become the target of the same scam. Social network files, supposedly with data from 500 million users around the world, are being traded on the internet.
Data that may have been obtained by scammers includes full names, email addresses, phone numbers, links to LinkedIn profiles and other social media.
To prove the attack was successful, cybercriminals released two million records as a sample. Access to these samples is being sold on the web for $2 in credits on a hacker forum. Meanwhile, the main author of the threat indicates that he is willing to auction the entire database for at least a million dollars, or more than 5 and a half million reais…
It remains unclear whether the threat agent is selling up-to-date information, or whether the data was obtained from a previous breach suffered by the social network.
The “good news” is that the files obtained do not include any sensitive data such as credit card details or legal documents.
So, more than ever, you need to be extra careful with passwords and pay close attention when entering websites that ask for personal data.
